Camel Trekking in Merzouga: Everything You Need to Know

Camel trek across the Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga

The classic Sahara experience, explained by local guides

A camel trek across the dunes of Erg Chebbi is the experience most travellers dream of when they think of the Sahara. Here are the answers to the questions we hear most often.

Sunset or sunrise?

Both are beautiful. A sunset camel ride is the classic choice: you ride towards camp as the dunes turn orange and red. A sunrise camel ride is quieter and cooler, with soft pink light and fewer people. Staying overnight in a camp lets you enjoy both.

How long does the trek last?

Most rides to the camps take about 1 to 1.5 hours each way, with a stop on a high dune for photos and the view. Longer treks deeper into the dunes are possible on request.

Is it comfortable?

Camels walk slowly and our saddles are padded. Hold on when the camel stands up and sits down – it leans forward and backward. If you prefer, you can walk part of the way next to the caravan with the guide.

What to wear

  • Long, light trousers to avoid rubbing.
  • A scarf or traditional chech against sun and wind – your guide will show you how to tie it.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • A small backpack only; leave big luggage in the vehicle or at the hotel.

Our camels

Camels are part of the life of local families. A good trek is calm and never rushed, the animals rest between rides, and each camel carries one rider.

Where the trek takes you

The caravan ends at your camp for the night. Choose a luxury camp, an authentic standard camp, a remote wild camp or a stay with a nomad family.
